Mini blinds are great for keeping the sun out of a room and offering a bit of privacy. The downside is, however, that they attract a lot of dust and it does not take long for the mini blinds to become dirty. Cleaning mini blinds regularly is a necessity to keep them in good condition. Regular dusting with a feather duster will remove some of the dust but in order to thoroughly clean mini blinds you will need to use a cleaning solution.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baking soda, or ammonia or borax powder
  • Degreaser, possibly
  • Old socks
  • Rubber gloves, possibly
  • Fabric softener sheet
  1. Step 1

Pull the string on the mini blinds to lock them into the top position. This will make it easier to carry the mini blinds through the house. Carefully detach the mini blinds from the window.

  2. Step 2

Place the mini blinds in the bathtub and release them to the full length. Partially close the slats in either direction, up or down.

  3. Step 3

Fill the tub with enough warm water to cover the mini blinds. Pour some baking soda into the bathtub. You may also use ammonia or borax powder in place of baking soda. Use one part ammonia or borax powder with one part water. Add a degreaser to the mix if the blinds are really dirty.

  4. Step 4

Allow the mini blinds to soak in the solution for a minimum of five minutes.

  5. Step 5

Put a pair of old socks on your hands. You may choose to put on rubber gloves with a pair of old socks over them to reduce exposure of the water to your hands. Run your fingers along each individual slat on the mini blinds. This will clean both sides at once.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the blinds with clean water by turning on the shower and running the blinds underneath the water.

  7. Step 7

Hold the blinds up over the tub for a minute to let them drip dry. Place them on a dry towel and then blot them dry with another towel. You may leave the blinds on the towel to let them air dry as well.

Tips & Warnings
  • Run a fabric softener sheet along each slat of the mini blinds once they are cleaned and hung back on the window. This will help to deter dirt, dust, and hair from adhering to the slats.
