How to Clean Mildew From Suede

Suede is a soft leather that is often used in clothing and furniture. It is durable and visually appealing, but mildew can grow if moisture builds up on suede's surface. Although the process is time consuming, mildew removal is possible if you follow specific guidelines.

• Clothing hanger
• Clothes line
• Boar bristled brush
• Clean cotton cloth

• Rubbing alcohol
• Saddle soap

Instructions

Sun Method

1. Place your suede clothing on a hanger and attach it to an outdoor clothesline for several sunny days. If the mildew-stained item is furniture, carry the entire piece outside and set it in the sun for several days, as long as there are no rain forecasts.

2. Remove the suede item from outside and gently work it over with a boar bristled brush.

3. Wipe down the suede with a fabric softener sheet to remove any remaining odors.

Petroleum Jelly Method

1. Place a dime sized portion of petroleum jelly on a clean cotton cloth.

2. Gently rub the petroleum onto the stained area.

3. Mix equal parts of water and rubbing alcohol.

4. Dampen a clean sponge with the solution and gently blot the stained area.

5. Condition the cleaned area with saddle soap.

Tips & Warnings

• Try the cleaning method on an inconspicuous part of the suede to test the effects before attempting to remove the stain.

• Even water can damage the surface of suede, so make sure there is no chance for rain when airing out your item. Too much oil or conditioner can actually promote mildew growth, so be careful not to overuse these items.
