How to Use Oxygen Flow Meters
Oxygen flow meters can be attached to any portable oxygen tank or stationary oxygen machine. The meter measures the amount of oxygen in liters per minute being produced and flowing to the oxygen user. Oxygen flow meters are most commonly used in hospitals and at home oxygen care, but are also used by firefighters who need oxygen when going into a fire and scuba divers.

1
Turn on the oxygen tank or machine. An oxygen flow meter is typically already attached, because they are necessary when oxygen is being used. The flow meter is either a straight vertical line or a circle.
-
2
Watch for the silver ball to move upwards, if the flow meter is vertical, or for the arrow to move, if the meter is a circle. This signals that oxygen is flowing. Read the number where the ball or arrow stops. This number is the liters per minute being released from the tank. Every flow meter will have a different range of numbers.

Change the level of oxygen being released by turning the knob located on the flow meter, if you are using an oxygen machine, or the knob on the oxygen tank, if you are using a portable tank. When you turn the knob, watch for the ball or arrow to move on your oxygen flow meter. It is important to set the oxygen flow meter to meet the needs of the oxygen tank user. Too little oxygen and too much oxygen can be harmful.
