How to Do a Sliding Knot in Jewelry
A sliding knot in jewelry allows you to make an adjustable length necklace that is shorter or longer, depending on how you like to wear it. Using a sliding knot instead of a standard clasp to finish a necklace allows you to create a necklace that can slip over the head and still become short enough to wear at the collar. Leather cord is commonly used for jewelry with sliding knots, but you also see it in macrame designs using hemp.
Instructions

1
Measure a piece of leather cord for your necklace. It should be long enough to reach the maximum drape you want for the necklace with approximately six inches extra for tying the sliding knots.
-
2
Use scissors to cut the leather cord to the measurement you need.
-
-
3
String on any beads or pendants you want the necklace to have.
-
4
Lay the necklace on a flat surface and bring the two ends of the cord around to form a circle, then cross them to shrink the circle to the smallest circumference you want for the necklace.
-
5
Bring the ends of the cord down so they touch the cord circle on the outside. Then tie each end around the section of cord it is next to with a simple overhand knot. Pull this knot tightly to secure it and trim the end.
-
6
Slide the knots closer to one another to extend the length of the necklace. Pull them farther apart to shorten it.

Tips & Warnings
Macrame knots such as the plafond knot, figure eight or barrel knot can add used the same way as the overhand knot to create sliders and give the necklace a more decorative look. A drop of jeweler's glue on the overhand knot will keep it from unraveling. With wire or chain jewelry, a sliding knot style necklace can be made by creating a lariat necklace that uses an open ring as a focal point for the chain to slide through to adjust the necklace length.
