How to Add Storm Windows

Storm windows are designed to fit outside your existing house windows. The benefit of storm windows is that they keep warm air in your home from escaping through your windows to the outside. This helps to retain heat as well as save money on your heating bills during the winter. Installing storm windows can be done in a relatively short amount of time.

Instructions

    • 1

Scrape old paint, caulk or other material from the window frame and trim with a scraper.

    • 2

Run a bead of caulk on the backside of the storm window around the edges and top. The caulk will prevent any gaps that will leak air.

    • 3

Place the storm window over the existing house window. Use a power drill or a screwdriver to secure the top of the storm window to the window frame.

    • 4

Close the bottom sash and then use the power drill to secure the sides of the window to the existing window frame.

    • 5

Drill a weep hole in the lower corner of each side of the storm window with the power drill. The weep holes should be located just above the window sill.

Tips & Warnings

  • The weep holes allow for condensation that has collected on the inside of the storm window to drain away.
