How to Change a Name on a Driver License in California
There are a number of reasons you might decide to change your name legally. You may have changed your marital status, or decided to take on the name of a legal guardian, or simply taken a different name. Whatever the reason, there is a procedure to go through in order to have all of your documentation altered to reflect the change. If you live in California, once your name has been changed legally, you will have to make sure that your new name is reflected on your California driver's license or identification card.
Things You'll Need
- Social Security Card
- California Driver's License or Identification Card application form DL 44 or DL 44C

Changing Your Name

1
Retain documentation of your name change and submit it to the Social Security Administration (SSA). Make sure that the SSA has records of your name change before contacting the Department of Motor Vehicles.
-
2
Bring your true full name document to the Department of Motor Vehicles. This document can be an adoption document, a name change document including your old and new names, a marriage certificate or domestic partnership document, or a dissolution of marriage document. In any case, the document must be government-certified. You will have to surrender your current driver's license or identification card.

3
While you are at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), pick up an application form. A DMV worker will take your photo and thumbprint, and accept your application fee (which varies).
-
4
The DMV will provide you with an interim license, valid for 60 days, or a receipt for your identification card. Make sure that you verify your address before leaving the DMV. Your new license or ID card should arrive at your home address within 60 days.

If your new license or identification card does not arrive within 60 days, check your status by calling 1-800-777-0133. Make sure that you have your temporary license or identification receipt with you when you call.

Tips & Warnings
Make an appointment at the DMV for faster service. Also check for specific application fees before going.
If the information you provide the DMV does not match your records with the SSA, you will receive a Request for Verification of Information letter, instead of receiving your license or identification card. You will need to contact the SSA to resolve the issue.
