How to Replace a Thermostat Yourself

Replacing old thermostats can be easy. Whether you are replacing a broken thermostat, or just an old thermostat for cosmetic purposes, you will find that replacing a thermostat can be easily done yourself. Here is a step by step guide on how to replace a thermostat.

Things You'll Need:

• Level
• Thermostat
• Phillips screwdriver
• Pencil

1. Turn off the power to your thermostat. This can be done by heading to your homes breaker box and switching the breaker that your thermostat is on to the "off" position.

2. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove your old thermostat. If it works, save it in case you need it as a back up later. If it doesn't work, simply throw it in your trash or recycle it. Make sure to mark which wires go to each terminal for future reference.

3. Level the new mounting plate over the wires on the wall and mark the spot with a pencil.

4. Screw the mounting plate onto the wall. A Phillips screwdriver will be enough to sink the screws into the soft drywall.

5. Match up the wires and connect them to the corresponding terminals of your new thermostat. Each wire can be secured to the thermostat by tightening it down with a screwdriver.

6. Snap the new thermostat on the mounting plate and your all set. Make sure to turn the power back on and follow the set up instructions in your new thermostats' manual.
