Things You'll Need:
- Wireless adapter
- PC Desktop computer
- Screwdriver
- Wireless router and modem
- Wireless adapter driver
- Flash drive
-
Step 1
Locate the driver for the wireless adapter. It will come with the adapter on a CD if you buy a new wireless adapter, or you can visit the site of the manufacturer for your specific wireless adapter and download it from there.
-
Step 2
Install the wireless adapter's driver on the computer you are going to install it on. Complete the install and then go to step two.
-
Step 3
Shut down your computer and then disconnect the power cord from the back of the machine. Make sure the wireless router is still plugged in and connected to the modem.
-
Step 4
Remove the cover to the PC (on Dell desktop computers this involves pressing down a latch on the side of the PC and sliding the cover towards the back).
-
Step 5
Remove the metal cover from the back of the computer by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place with a small screwdriver and set it aside.
-
Step 6
Locate an open adapter card slot on the computer motherboard to install the wireless adapter. Then unscrew and remove the antenna from the adapter card, slide the end of the wireless adapter into the back of the computer and press the card into the slot. It will snap into place. The edge with the copper metal teeth goes into the slot on the computer. The back end of the wireless adapter should mount flush with the back of the computer tower and the mounting holes on the wireless adapter metal plate will line up with those on the back of the computer.
-
Step 7
Insert the screw you removed in step 5 into the mounting hole and tighten. Reattach the antenna by screwing it back onto the mounting.
-
Step 8
Turn on the computer and complete the installation wizard. The computer should recognize the device and prompt you to complete the install of the wireless adapter card.
