Windows enables you to specify which sound is played in a variety of situations, such as when an error occurs or when you empty the Recycle Bin. Have a little fun by choosing from a variety of sounds and sound schemes. These instructions are for Windows 98.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Open the Start menu and click Settings, then Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click Sounds.

  3. Step 3

Click the down arrow under Schemes to choose a set of themed sounds. The scheme will automatically apply its sounds to preset events, such as opening a menu.

  4. Step 4

Select an item in the Events list to change an individual sound. Click the down arrow under Name and choose a sound, or choose None to turn off sound for that event. Click the Play button next to Preview to audition the sound.

  5. Step 5

Click OK to save your changes.

Tips & Warnings
  • To add custom sounds that aren't in Windows, download or record them to your hard drive as .wav files. Then access the Sounds window, highlight the event you want to associate with the sound, and click the "Browse" button to find the custom sound.
