Potato chips are a delicious and simple snack!

Lays® got it right when they said “You can’t have just one”. Potato chips are a simple and delicious snack that is great for any time of year, and most any occasion. While the majority of us get our fried potato fix from a bag, it really is easy to make them yourself.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A fryer or large pot
  • Any type of cooking oil
  • A sharp knife, mandolin, or potato slicer
  • A fry basket or slotted spoon
  • A container to keep them in
  1. Step 1
    Get your oil preheating.

Making homemade potato chips requires only a few steps and ingredients. To start with, you will need to get the oil preheating in a large pot or fryer. Preheat your oil to 400 degrees while you move onto step 2.

  2. Step 2
    Wash and peel your potatoes.

    Wash and peel your potatoes.

While your oil is preheating, wash and peel about 2-3 potatoes.

  3. Step 3
    Slice your potatoes thinly.

    Slice your potatoes thinly.

Slicing your potatoes is the make or break step in this process. Depending on how skilled you are with a knife, you can slice the potatoes to the exact width you prefer. For those of you who prefer simplicity, you are better off using an adjustable slicer. Not only will this save you time, but a slicer will yield uniformly thick slices.

  4. Step 4

Once you have your potatoes sliced and your oil heated, you can begin to fry your chips. This step only takes a couple minutes so you CANNOT walk away with potatoes in the hot oil. Drop in about 10 or so slices at a time for between 2-3 minutes. The chips will brown and deform slightly; this is normal. Scoop out each batch onto a paper towel-lined plate or container. If you wish to add salt, this is best done while the chips are still warm and slightly oily.

  5. Step 5
    Enjoy!

When you have a full batch of chips fried, transfer them into whatever type of container you like and enjoy!

Tips & Warnings
  • Always, ALWAYS remember to exercise extreme caution when working with hot oil!

on 10/30/2009 I have made homemade potato chips, as well. Having a mandolin makes easy work of the slicing. Try making sweet potato chips - delicious.
