The first and extremely important first step is to be very prepared for the interview. Be over prepared if you have to.
First, know your self and your resume like the back of your hand. Know how your skills and strengths fit into the job and industry your applying for. Know exactly what strengths and skill they are and why they are a good fit. Know how your experiences make you a good fit for this job and actually be ready to explain those experiences to the interviewer. Have explanations ready to explain your weaknesses, why you want the job, what is the best thing about you, and other general interview questions. The main point is have well thought out explanations and answers for every question you can think of.
Second, know the job and industry you are applying for. Go on the internet and do your research about the job, the company and the industry. Find out what the needs are of the company and try to figure out and explain how your experiences, strengths and skills will help with that need. Also, interviewers are interested in answering your questions. So, while your doing your research, write down five to ten intelligent questions you can ask.

Obviously the first impression that the interviewer has of you is extremely important since they will only be spending a short time with you to decide if you are the one to hire. This means that you also need to be prepared that you give them the best you as possible.
First, make sure you are early to the interview. Make sure that if there is a chance that traffic or other obstacles will be in the way that you prepare and come even earlier. Late arrival is never forgiven.
Second, make sure you look good. You are well groomed, dressed appropriate for the job, clothes ironed, and shoes polished. It won't hurt if you pop in a mint just in case. A visual image is what the interviewer will remember you by so its best to make is as good as you can.

During the interview be prepared to be enthusiastic and confident. If you did your homework like your were supposed to you should have no reason not be confident in your approach. Bring your resume and don't assume they the interviewer has reviewed it yet. Make sure that you speak clearly and you look the interviewer in the eye while speaking. Greeting and ending the interview, make sure you give a firm handshake.

After the interview, make sure you write a thank you email right away. In the email explain how thankful you are for their time and recap the highlights of your interview. Since many job hunter seem to neglect the follow-up process, this email can be edge you need to differentiate yourself from the competition.
