One of the most important steps in boosting your child's self esteem is acceptance. You must accept your child for the special person they are. If you put unrealistic hopes and dreams on them to satisfy your own needs that will come to think that they are not good enough. Let them choose their own dreams. Encourage them to always follow their own strengths and abilities.

Don't put stereotypes on your children. If your daughter wants to be a firefighter or soldier encourage her. If your son wants to be a nurse or fashion designer let him. Your child can be anything he or she wants to be. If your child wants to be a trash collector and is truly happy with this dream don't be disappointed. It is their life after all and their self esteem will be hurt if you discourage them.

Last but not least, praise your child for small accomplishments as well as big ones. Don't go overboard. Kids can spot a phoney miles away. Just remember to be fast with encouragement and slow with discouragement.
