Knowing how to file unemployment insurance claims will help you to get the money that you deserve faster. If you have been working and are now no longer working, you are eligible for unemployment. Unemployment is not a government handout. Unemployment money comes from a fund that you paid into when you were working. There are no longer unemployment offices where you can go a file for a claim. You now need to file a claim over the phone on online.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

File for unemployment insurance benefits over the phone. You can find the phone number for the unemployment insurance claim office in your local telephone directory. Look in the front section in the directory called the government section. It is usually light blue or a different color than the white pages or the yellow pages.

Look under the word "unemployment". Call the number listed. Be prepare to answer questions about yourself and your prior employment. You will be required to give information such as: date of termination (the last day you worked), previous jobs, address of employer, your social security number, and your address.

  2. Step 2

Apply for unemployment insurance benefits online if you have computer and internet access. You will need the same information that you need to provide over the phone so be prepared to answer all questions that the unemployment insurance office will ask.

All of the information that you provide must be correct. If you were not legally employed in the United States of America, you will not be eligible to claim unemployment insurance benefits even if you paid into the fund.

  3. Step 3

Follow through with your unemployment insurance claim. About one week after you applied either over the telephone or online, you will receive documentation in the mail. You will need to fill it out and mail it back as quickly as possible. The same day you receive it if possible.

If you are eligible, you should receive your first check within seven to ten days of filing.

To continue to receive unemployment insurance payments, you will need to continue to be unemployed and fill out a new form every two weeks. If your employment status changes, you must notify them immediately.

Sometimes you can still receive benefits even when you are working. If the amount that you are earning is smaller than the unemployment check, you may still receive a check, it will be for a smaller amount.

Whether you are filing for unemployment insurance in Oregon, Kentucky or California or any other state in the U.S., you will be able to find the information you need on the unemployment insurance claims website.

Find a job as soon as you can to save your financial standing and your ego.
