Step 1
Size does matter. If you have very long hair, you are going to need a very large round brush. This will make your hair easier to manage while straightening your hair. If you get a round brush that is too small, you will risk knotting your hair.
If your hair is shoulder length, a medium size round hairbrush will do just fine. Remember, those tiny little round brushes are nothing but an accident waiting to happen and will turn your hair into a knotted mess. -
Step 2
Bristle type is important as well.
While some prefer to use boar bristle brushes, it is important to remember that this type of bristle may actually burn quickly when used with a hair dryer and damage your hair along with it. This type of bristle brush may also cause breakage and split ends but does promote shiny hair. When using this type of brush, keep the hairdryer on a low setting and a few inches away from the brush.
Nylon bristle brushes are generally a cheaper alternative to boar bristle hair brushes and is less likely to become damaged from the heat of the dryer.
Avoid plastic bristles at all costs. These will melt almost immediately when straightening your hair. -
Step 3
Ceramic iron brushes are wonderful because they get hotter than wood or plastic hairbrushes while protecting the hair from over drying or burning.
Be sure when buying a ceramic iron brush that you buy one with vents so that the heat is evenly distributed.

on 11/14/2009 Great points on the importance of the right brush. And yes, it is all too easy to get a small round brush tangled in long hair!
