Obtaining a federal tax ID number, also known as an employer ID number (EIN) is a very simple process. With the help of the internet, the IRS has created an easy way to apply for and instantly receive your EIN without having to file any physical paperwork. Follow these steps to get your EIN in minutes.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Determine your business structure. There are many different types of business structures such as corporations, limited liability companies, and sole proprietorships. You need to make sure that you know exactly how your business is structured so that the IRS can categorize you properly.

  2. Step 2

Gather all of your personal information as well as your business information and have it nearby before you begin your application. There are a number of questions on the application that ask for very specific details, and having this kind of information at your fingertips will ensure that your application process goes as fast as possible.

  3. Step 3

Go to IRS website located at irs.gov and select the "Businesses" tab, then choose "Employer ID Numbers" from the lower left menu. These choices will take you to the main page of the IRS site that covers all of the details relating to employer ID numbers.

  4. Step 4

Choose the link that says "Apply for an EIN Onlineā€ then scroll down to the bottom of the next page and select the link that says "Apply Online Now." This will take you directly to the online form where you will input all of your information in order to receive your EIN.

  5. Step 5

Follow the onscreen instructions and carefully fill in all of the blanks. Read each question completely, and don't rush the process or you may make a mistake and have to fill out a new application. After your application is submitted you will instantly receive your new employer ID number along with a confirmation letter which you can view in PDF format.

  6. Step 6

Print out the PDF confirmation letter and keep it in a safe place. The IRS will not issue you another letter like this, so make sure that you don't lose or misplace it. You may also want to record your EIN in another separate place such as your hard copy record books or bookkeeping software.
