How to Care for Empire Zoysia

Empire Zoysia is a brand of turfgrass that is low-maintenance and ideal for warm climates. Zoysiagrass will flourish during spring and summer months to create a lush lawn, and during winter months it will be brown or dormant. Zoysiagrass is a popular choice because it is relatively easy to care for, as long as you follow a few simple steps.

Things You'll Need

  • fertilizer
  • hose
  • lawn mower
  • Fertilize the soil. According to the University of Georgia, zoysiagrass does well with 2 to 3 pounds of nitrogen fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of lawn per year. If you have particularly sandy soil, you should use a full 3 pounds of fertilizer. Apply half the fertlizer in the spring and the other half in the late summer.

  • Water frequently. Empire Zoysia requires more water than some other turfgrass varieties. If the grass begins to show signs of underwatering, such as turning to a blueish-gray color or wilting, it is time to water your lawn. Water the yard so that the soil is saturated to a depth of up to 8 inches.

  • Mow the grass. Keep Empire Zoysia at a height of 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches, using a rotary mower with sharp blades. Raise the height approximately 1/2 inch during dry spells. Avoid letting the grass grow too high, or mowing too infrequently, because this can cause thatching in the yard.
