Empire Zoysia is a brand of turfgrass that is low-maintenance and ideal for warm climates. Zoysiagrass will flourish during spring and summer months to create a lush lawn, and during winter months it will be brown or dormant. Zoysiagrass is a popular choice because it is relatively easy to care for, as long as you follow a few simple steps.

Fertilize the soil. According to the University of Georgia, zoysiagrass does well with 2 to 3 pounds of nitrogen fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of lawn per year. If you have particularly sandy soil, you should use a full 3 pounds of fertilizer. Apply half the fertlizer in the spring and the other half in the late summer.
Water frequently. Empire Zoysia requires more water than some other turfgrass varieties. If the grass begins to show signs of underwatering, such as turning to a blueish-gray color or wilting, it is time to water your lawn. Water the yard so that the soil is saturated to a depth of up to 8 inches.
Mow the grass. Keep Empire Zoysia at a height of 1/2 inch to 1 1/2 inches, using a rotary mower with sharp blades. Raise the height approximately 1/2 inch during dry spells. Avoid letting the grass grow too high, or mowing too infrequently, because this can cause thatching in the yard.
