How to Build a Chicken Incubator With Junk Around the House
Making a chicken incubator with junk found around the house is easier than you would think. You can successfully build one and hatch chicks in your home so that the kids or even adults can enjoy the miracle of birth. You will have to find a farmer that will give you the eggs, but the incubator will be the easiest part of hatching chickens.
Things You'll Need
- Aquarium or wood box (10- to 20-gallon size)
- Thermostat
- Small lamp
- 75-watt light bulb
- Clear plastic
- Duct tape
Instructions

1
Lay the wood box or aquarium on its side so that the opening is facing you.
-
2
Cut the piece of plastic so that it can be taped to the top of the opening and flip down to the cover the front opening to keep the heat inside. Measure two extra inches that extend beyond the bottom so the excess lays flat on the ground instead of ending at the bottom of the wood box or aquarium. Use the duct tape to secure the plastic to the top of the aquarium or wood box.

3
Run the small lamp inside the box, with the cord coming out the bottom of the opening. Use the 75-watt light bulb for the heat source.
-
4
Place the thermometer in the box toward the back where the eggs will be. Turn on the light and monitor the temperature before you place the eggs inside. The temperature should stay between 99.1 and 99.3 degrees F.
