  1. How to Make Worm Compost Tea

    • 1

Collect the worm compost from the worm or compost bin. Collect 2 cups for every 5 gallons of water you plan to use. Next, place the worm compost inside the pantyhose and tie the ends securely. This will serve as the worm compost tea bag.

    • 2

Fill the 5-gallon container. You can use tap water but let it sit out overnight to allow the chlorine in the water to evaporate. Chlorine can kill the bacteria in the compost, rendering it useless.

    • 3

Immerse the ends of the air pump in the water. Next, place the compost-filled pantyhose in the water.

    • 4

Add 1 tsp. of molasses to the water for every 5 gallons of compost tea you plan to make. The molasses provides food for the microorganisms.

    • 5

Turn on the air pump and let the entire mixture steep for 24 to 48 hours, then the tea will be ready to apply to your plants. It can be used as plant water or placed in a spray bottle to treat the foliage.

Tips & Warnings

  • Once the worm droppings have made the tea, don't throw them away. It can still be used in the garden or placed back into the compost bin. You can place the compost-filed sock directly into the water to make the tea or you can attach it to a dowel and suspend it in the water.
