How to Pick a Good Honeydew Melon

Save

Honeydew melon is a delicious fruit rich in vitamins, including Vitamin C, Vitamin B6, folate and potassium. Ripe honeydew is the perfect addition to any fruit salad and is an antioxident known to help reduce blood pressure, improve cardiovascular health and prevent cancer. It's also considered the sweetest of all melons. Honeydew is a seasonal fruit that is best in late July and August. Choosing a good honeydew melon is easy if you know what to look for.

  • Head to your local fruit stand or supermarket. Most carry honeydew melon throughout the year, though they are most flavorful in late summer.

  • Check the melon's outer color. A ripe honeydew melon has a rich, creamy yellow color.

  • Handle the melon to check its freshness. A ripe melon should feel waxy on the exterior. This means the starch in the melon has turned to sugar so you'll wind up with a sweet, juicy melon. The melon should be firm all around except for the softer part near the stem. The best melons are fairly large and weigh about 5 pounds.

  • Smell the melon. It should smell sweet even from the outside.

  • Shake the melon a little. Ideally, you should hear the seeds inside rattle. Avoid melons that sound soupy or mushy inside as these are overripe and will taste sour.

  • Taste the melon. Some farmer's markets will let you do this if they are certain the melon is ripe.

  • Keep the melon at room temperature for a couple of days or until it's completely ripe before eating.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't thump the melon to check its sound when choosing it. This only works for watermelons and you'll wind up bruising the fruit. Refrigerated melon will keep for about five days after you cut it up. Serve honeydew melon at room temperature and add a bit of lemon or lime juice to maximize sweetness.
  • Don't buy a melon that's covered in blemishes or is especially firm or soft. Avoid melons that are totally green on the outside.
