- Bitter apple spray
- Foil
- Dog crate

Step 1
Purchase bitter apple spray online or at a pet stores, and spray it onto the area of the rug that your dog has been chewing. The spray is non-toxic to your dog and should not discolor the carpet. However, test it on a small unnoticeable area first, just to be sure.

Areas of carpet where your dog chews can also be covered in aluminum foil or thick plastic until chewing subsides.

Purchase an appropriately sized dog crate for your dog. Put your dog in this crate anytime he will be unsupervised in your home. Also, send your dog to his crate for 10 to 15 minutes every time he is being reprimanded for chewing your rug.

Provide your dog with dog toys that are not easily destroyed when chewed. Hard rubber works well for this. These toys act as a deterrent by keeping your dog from chewing on inappropriate objects such as rugs.

Dogs often chew destructively out of boredom and pent-up energy, so exercise and attention are preventive measures. Walk your dog at least once daily--ideally twice--on her leash and harness or collar, and have at least one daily play session.
