How to Make My Own Kitchen Compost Container
Composting is an excellent way to recycle fruit, vegetable and yard waste. When composting is done correctly, worms transform the waste into highly nutritious garden or potting soil. A compost container right in your kitchen makes composting easy and convenient, and building one is simple. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Drill small holes in the lid of the plastic container. This will allow excess moisture to escape while keeping small insects like fruit flies away from the decomposing waste.
-
2
Tear up pieces of newspaper and crumple them into balls. Fill the bin about halfway with newspaper scraps.

3
Put your waste on top of the newspaper. Waste could include scraps of fruit and vegetables, egg shells (rinsed), coffee grounds and yard or garden waste like leaves and grass clippings. Avoid putting any meat or processed foods in the compost bin.

4
Add red wriggler worms to the compost bin. These little guys will break down the waste and turn it into nutrient-rich soil. For a 10-gallon container, add as many as 500 to 1000 worms.

Tips & Warnings
Once a week, use a trowel or large spoon to mix the contents of the compost bin. Doing this will ensure that the worms can get to all the waste in order to break it down. If the decomposing matter in the container seems to get too squishy and wet, add more ripped up newspaper to absorb moisture. As long as you maintain appropriate moisture, the compost bin will omit only a subtle earthy odor. Since the compost isn't very stinky, it won't be a problem to store the compost container in a kitchen pantry or under the sink. Just keep the compost bin out of direct sunlight.
