How to Find Coarse Horticultural Vermiculite

Vermiculite is a naturally occurring volcanic mineral that expands with the use of heat. For 80 years, vermiculite has been mostly used for insulation, but it also is used in horticulture. Adding vermiculite to soil improves the airflow by preventing compaction. It resembles gold flakes. Vermiculite mines are found in the United States, China and South Africa. Adding coarse vermiculite to your gardening supplies can improve the overall growth of your plants. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Go to a gardening and lawn-care store. The vermiculite should be found in bags next to perlite within the mulching section of the store. Ask a sales associate if you are having trouble finding it.

    • 2

Go to a larger store such as Walmart or a home improvement store such as Home Depot. Check the store's gardening section, usually outside or near the front door. Ask a sales associate if they carry vermiculite--not all larger stores do.

    • 3

Go to the Home Harvest website and click the "Garden Supplies" link on the left-hand toolbar. Scroll through the selection and choose how much vermiculite you want to buy. Sizes include 4 dry quarts, 16 dry quarts and 1.5 bushels. Click "Add to Your Shopping Cart" and enter your customer information to check out.

    • 4

Go to the eBay website and type "Horticultural Vermiculite" into the search bar. Bid on or "Buy Now" an item of coarse vermiculite that you would like to buy. Bags of vermiculite are often listed on eBay at a cheaper price than what is sold at retail stores. Create an eBay account if you do not have one by clicking "Register" on the top menu.

    • 5

Go to the Master Gardening website and select how many 18-quart bags of vermiculite you want to order. Click "Add to Basket" and then "Check Out" to complete your order.

Tips & Warnings

  • Bigger bags are often sold in gardening stores rather than in larger chain stores.

  • Small traces of asbestos are known to be found in horticultural vermiculite. Do not expose yourself to vermiculite for a long time.
