How to Clean Wrestling Mats with Bleach

Wrestling mats in regular use require frequent cleaning. Wrestlers leave large amounts of germs and bacteria on the mat, and contact with a dirty mat can result in illness, worms being one of the most common. Bleach is one of the best cleaners, but it must be used properly to actually kill the germs on the mat.

Things You'll Need

  • Cup Clorox bleach
  • Bucket (8-12 liters ideally)
  • Water
  • Sponge

Instructions

  1. Cleaning a Wrestling Mat

    • 1

Fill the bucket three-quarters of the way with water. Pour a cup of bleach into the water.

    • 2

Soak the sponge in the bleach/water solution, then wring out excess solution from the sponge.

    • 3

Scrub the mat with the sponge. Clean the entire surface of the mat.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some people do not like the smell of bleach, so perhaps spray the mat with a pleasant-smelling disinfectant after cleaning or wipe it down again with a better-smelling cleaner. The mat should be cleaned regularly -- ideally after every practice.

  • Do not use more than a cup of water in the bleach/water solution. More can cause staining. Wait until the mixture is dry on the mat before using it again. Bleach, in contact with the skin before dry, can cause itching and irritation.
