How to Paint a Pie Tin

These disposable pie tins are inexpensive and any mistakes can be painted over with additional paint so you can feel free to experiment with different colors and designs until you find one that is perfect for your custom pie tin.

Instructions

    • 1

Wash the pie tin thoroughly with hot soapy water to remove any dirt or food particles. Dry the pie tin with a hand towel before you begin painting.

    • 2

Spread a layer of newspaper over your work surface to avoid damage from paint spills or overspray.

    • 3

Paint the entire pie tin with a spray paint primer appropriate for painting metal. Check the back of the spray paint label to ensure that the paint will adhere to aluminum or metal surfaces.

    • 4

Paint the tin with acrylic paints in the color or colors of your choice. Allow the paint to dry completely.

    • 5

Apply a water-based, clear, nontoxic varnish to the pie plate with a soft bristled paint brush. This will protect your painting and provide a durable, hard surface on the pie tin.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can outline your dry painted designs with a permanent marker before you apply the varnish to make the designs pop and enhance the visual appeal of the pie tin.

  • Do not bake food directly in a painted pie tin. The paint could react to the high temperatures of the oven and cause harmful fumes. Instead, transfer baked goods to the painted tin after they have cooled for a pretty presentation. Painted pie tins are not dishwasher safe. Hand wash the tin to avoid damaging your paint job.
