How to Make an Egg Drop Box

Save

The egg drop is a popular science experiment conducted by elementary school children learning about physics. The goal is to create a box that will protect the egg from a high fall, usually off of a rooftop. Egg drop boxes that will protect the egg from the fall are very simple to construct, and can be done using everyday household materials.

Things You'll Need

  • Egg
  • Egg crate
  • Cotton balls
  • Straws
  • Small cardboard box
  • Masking tape
  • Cut one small section of the egg crate from the top and bottom part. Put the egg in between the pieces. Wrap masking tape around the egg and crate pieces until it is about a quarter of an inch thick.

  • Take the straws and begin taping them to the inside of the box around all sides. Cut any excess that sticks out of the box.

  • Line the bottom of the box with a thick layer of cotton balls.

  • Place the egg inside the box on top of the cotton balls. Fill in all areas surrounding the egg with cotton balls until the box is firmly packed with the egg securely in the center.

  • Tape the box completely shut. Wrap it entirely in masking tape so that none of the protective straws or cotton balls can get out.

Tips & Warnings
