How to Install Koch Wire Rope Clips

Koch Industries, the makers of Koch wire rope clips, is described by Hoover's as "one of the largest (if not the largest) private companies in the U.S." While usually called wire rope clips, wire rope clamps are sometimes called U-bolt cable clamps. They are used to form a loop in the end of wire rope or wire cable. If installed correctly, Koch wire rope clamps will carry 80 percent of the safe working load of the line on which they are installed.

Instructions

    • 1

Select three Koch wire rope clamps of the appropriate size and remove the nuts from one of the U-bolts. Slide the saddle (so called because it's shaped like a saddle) off the ends of the U-bolt.

    • 2

Turn the end of the wire rope (the "bitter end") back on to the standing part (the part of the rope between the ends) to form a bight (a bend in the rope that doesn't cross the standing part). The minimum amount of "turnback" (the number of inches of wire rope that must be clamped) varies according to the size of the wire rope and is specified in the documentation for the Koch wire rope clips.

    • 3

Adjust the circumference of the bight to fit you need. Apply the first Koch wire rope clip's U-bolt by slipping it over the the top of the turnback near the end of the turnback. Slide the saddle on to the U-bolt so that the curved surface of the clamp fits against the rope.

    • 4

Thread the nuts onto the threads on the U-bolt part of the clip and tighten until finger tight. Consult the documentation for the Koch wire rope clips and determine the torque to be applied to the nuts for maximum holding power. Use the torque wrench to tighten the nuts to the appropriate level.

    • 5

Set the second clip at the point where the bight touches the standing part to form the loop by sliding the U-bolt over the top of the turnback. Slide the saddle into place on the U-bolt, thread the nuts onto the U-bolt and tighten to the appropriate torque. Install the third clip---if required---half way between the clamps already in position.

Tips & Warnings

  • All three U-bolts must be turned the same way, so that the saddle (not the U-bolt) is on the standing part of the wire rope and the U-bolt on the turnback.

  • Failing to follow the instructions provided with the Koch wire rope clips can cause serious injury or death.
