How to Dye a Silk Scarf

Dyeing a silk scarf yourself may seem like a daunting task, but it is actually quite simple and can be done easily with two surprising elements: Kool-Aid and vinegar. Silk is traditionally dyed or painted, and this method is easy to do at home. This project makes a fun, rainy-day activity for children and adults alike, and the finished scarves make thoughtful gifts or playthings for children. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 100-percent silk scarves, preferably in light colors
  • Kool-Aid powder mixture in whichever flavors correspond to the colors you want: three or four packs for each scarf
  • White vinegar
  • Glass or plastic bowls or containers
  • Rubber gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Place scarves in warm to hot tap water with about three cups of vinegar.

    • 2

Pour the packets of Kool-Aid into individual bowls for each color. The bowls should be fairly large in order to hold the scarves and dye mix. Add two cups of vinegar and hot water to the powder and stir until completely dissolved. Wear gloves to protect your hands from getting stained.

    • 3

Place damp scarf in Kool-Aid dye mixture and stir it around until it is completely covered by the dye liquid. Continue stirring to get even color on the scarf and let it sit in the bath for about two minutes. The silk will absorb all the color from the water/vinegar mix, and the water should be a clear, milky color.

    • 4

Remove silks from Kool-Aid bath and dump leftover water down the drain. Rinse the scarves under cool water until the water runs clear.

    • 5

Hang scarves to dry. Once they are completely dry, they are ready to wear or play with.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mix the colored powders to create new colors. You can also use food coloring--just add drops of food coloring to the vinegar-water mix instead of Kool-Aid. Add embroidery or beads for extra detail.
