How to Turn Off Your Computer's Sound Altogether

If you prefer peace and quiet (or maybe your office does), you can turn off the sound on your computer completely. These instructions are for Windows 95 and 98.

Things You'll Need:

    Turn Off Windows Default Sounds

  1. Step 1

    Open the Start menu and select Settings and then Control Panel.

  2. Step 2

    Double-click Sounds.

  3. Step 3

    Click the down arrow under Schemes and choose No Sounds.

  4. Step 4

    Click OK.

  5. Turn Off Application Sounds

  6. Step 1

    Right-click the speaker icon in the System Tray (bottom-right corner of screen on taskbar is the default location).

  7. Step 2

    Click Open Volume Controls.

  8. Step 3

    Click to place a check mark in Mute All box.

  9. Turn Off Speakers

  10. Step 1

    Turn off externally powered speakers.

  11. Step 2

    Press Mute button (icon is usually a speaker with a slash through it) on your monitor if your speakers are built into your monitor.
