Instructions

    • 1

Prep the walls for painting by wiping them down with a damp cloth. Also wipe the baseboards. Let the walls dry completely.

    • 2

Place the painter's tape on the ceiling where the wall meets the ceiling. Do this around the entire wall. This will prevent paint from getting on the ceiling. Cover the baseboards and molding with painter's tape. Remove any electrical or light covers.

    • 3

Paint the walls the lightest color of paint with a paint roller. Let dry and paint a second coat. After two coats of paint are on the walls, let the paint dry at least 24 hours before working on the stripes.

    • 4

Measure along the top of the wall where the walls meet the ceiling. Make a small mark with a pencil every 6 inches.

    • 5

Make a vertical line with the tape going from the mark at the ceiling to the baseboard. Check the line with a level as you are applying the tape to make sure it is a straight line. Put another line of tape on the wall parallel from the first line 6 inches apart. Continue to do this every 6 inches until all the walls are covered in tape stripes.

    • 6

Paint the darker color of paint between the first two lines of tape. Overlap the paint with the tape just a little. The tape is creating a resist; once it is removed you will have a crisp line. Continue to paint every other area between taped lines.

    • 7

Let the paint dry 24 hours; carefully remove the painter's tape to reveal the stripes of paint.

Tips & Warnings

  • Use a small paintbrush to touch up areas if the lines are not crisp. Alter the size of stripes depending on the size of room and size of stripes desired. The stripes can be different widths; they do not have to be uniform in size. Place the tape horizontally around the room for horizontal stripes.
