How to Make Fabric Room Screens

Fabric room screens are great decorative pieces, and offer a stylish way to hide clutter or separate a room for multiple uses. The instructions provided here are for a free-standing tri-fold fabric room screen, and are easy enough to make even for those with no sewing experience. Note that you can add more panels to your screen if desired, and can use a variety of fabrics, though cottons and cotton/poly blends work best to provide the most privacy in the lightest weight of fabric.

Instructions

  1. Sewing the Panels

    • 1

Measure and cut three rectangles of fabric, 66 inches by 36 inches each.

    • 2

Measure 3-inch squares at each corner of all three rectangles, and cut this fabric away. Sew a 1/8-inch hem on each of the cut edges to prevent fraying.

    • 3

On one side of the rectangle, fold the fabric over 1 1/2 inches. At the bottom of this fold, where the fabric meets, sew the fabric together to create a kind of tube.

Repeat this process for the three remaining sides of the rectangle, and for all sides of the other two fabric rectangles.

    Assembling the Frame

    • 4

Slide 60-inch dowels into fabric tubes on the long sides of each of the three panels.

    • 5

Slide 30 inch dowels into the fabric tubes on the short sides of the panels.

    • 6

Use elbow connectors to connect the 60-inch dowels to the 30-inch dowels to create a rectangular frame to hold the fabric in place.

    • 7

Cut 4 lengths of ribbon, 12 inches long each.

    • 8

Place the panels side by side in a row. At the top and bottom corners, use the ribbon to securely tie the panels together.

    • 9

Set the entire screen upright in a Z shape to help it stand.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use 1-inch PVC pipe instead of wooden dowels, which will support the screen better if you are using thicker, heavier fabrics.
