How to Hang Adjustable Shelves

Adjustable shelves that hang on the wall are a convenient way to add a storage space to any room. Because they mount to the wall, they take up less floor space than free-standing shelves. These types of shelves are convenient because they easily can be changed around, and you can use as many or as few shelves as you want. They can also be used with any size shelves, long or short, in order to conform to size of the space. Adjustable shelves have two major components: wall tracks and brackets. With the correct tools, adjustable shelves can be easily and affordably hung.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide how many tracks you will need. Use only two tracks for shorter shelves. Shelves longer than 36 inches and shelves that support heavier weights should have at least three tracks.

  2. Step 2

Mark the locations of the wall studs where the shelves will be hung.

  3. Step 3

Hold the first track to the wall where a stud is located. Use hollow wall anchors if you are unable to screw into studs. Mark the hole where the top screw will go. Drill a pilot hole. Attach the bracket to the wall by screwing in the top screw. Use a level to make sure it is plumb, then drill pilot holes and put in the remaining screws. Insert a single-shelf bracket somewhere on this track.

  4. Step 4

Hold the second bracket to the wall. Insert another single-shelf bracket on this track at the same point as the shelf bracket on the other track. Set a level so it rests on the two brackets (or on a board that rests on the two brackets if you have a shorter level) and adjust the second track so that it is level with the first. Mark the hole where top screw will go, drill a pilot hole and attach the bracket. Make sure it is plumb and put in the remaining screws.

  5. Step 5

Insert the brackets and set in the shelves. Some wall-mounted shelves have brackets that hook onto the shelf . Others are joined to the shelf by screwing up through the bottom of the bracket and into the underside of the shelf.
