Things You'll Need:
- Garden fork or shovel
- Organic matter
-
Step 1
Transplant hosta in the spring. Roots will have time to establish during the growing season before winter sets in.
-
Step 2
Choose a location with well-drained soil. Partial shade to full shade is optimal, but check your particular species for its requirements before planting.
-
Step 3
Amend the soil with organic matter to provide nutrients for your transplants. Mix in the organic material to a depth of 12 inches or more to ensure even distribution.
-
Step 4
Dig hosta using a sharp shovel or garden fork. Use clean tools to avoid spreading disease from infected plants. Make a wide circle around the plant and dig down far enough to avoid cutting roots. Lift the hosta carefully.
-
Step 5
Divide the hosta into sections if necessary. Make your cuts with a sharp tool to ensure that foliage is attached to the roots at each division.
-
Step 6
Dig holes for the transplants that are 1 to 3 feet apart to allow for mature growth.
-
Step 7
Plant the hosta deep enough so the crown of the root ball is barely covered by soil.
-
Step 8
Water well after planting. Provide deep, less frequent waterings to encourage stronger root development.
