How to Create Virtual Dolls

Virtual dolls, also known as digital or pixel dolls, are cartoon-like graphics that are created by dragging and dropping different hair styles, accessories and items of clothing onto a doll body. The process of creating these dolls is called "dolling." On the Internet they are frequently referred to as "dollz" to distinguish them from traditional toy dolls. The hobby has existed since 1995, when dollz were created to use as avatars in the graphical chat program "The Palace," according to Mitch Borgeson in the article "Playing with Dollz" on Salon.com. You can make a virtual doll on many different sites, but the process is similar no matter which site you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a dollmaker to create your doll. Dollmakers are websites that contain the body bases and different accessories for the dolls. Some sites specialize in certain types of dolls, like punk or anime, while others offer a variety. See Resources for links.

    • 2

Select the body base for your doll and hold down your left mouse button to drag it to the white space, usually in the center of the page. Some sites may have separate upper and lower body bases and some may have whole-body bases.

    • 3

Pick a hair color and style for your doll and drag it onto your doll's head. You can also select a hat or other hair accessories and place these on top of the hair as part of your doll's outfit.

    • 4

Choose an outfit for your doll. Most doll sites offer a variety of different tops and bottoms, as well as one-piece dresses and suits. You can also choose accessories such as tights, shoes and jewelry. Click and drag these items to place them on your doll.

    • 5

Press "Print Screen" on your keyboard and open a graphic-editing program such as Paint or Photoshop. Create a new file and press "CTRL-V" to paste your screen shot into the program. Use the crop tool to crop the image so that all you see is the white background and your doll. Save the file to save a copy of the doll that you just created.

Tips & Warnings

  • After you have saved a copy of your doll, you can share it in your favorite doll community. Just upload it to a free image host, such as Photobucket.com or ImageShack.com, and share the URL with your friends.
