Pet odor can be an offensive smell to live with, and eliminating them can be a daunting task, but it can be done with time and patience. If you are removing just pet odor it may be an easier job than removing pet urine odors. Pet urine odors seem to reappear during warmer seasons even after you have attempted to clean up the mess. Nevertheless, you can buy products from your local pet store, online, or your veterinarian office to help you with your task.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Steam cleaner
  • 1 cap full pet carpet cleaner
  • 1 cap full carpet cleaner
  • Enzymatic based cleaner
  • Commercial pet odor removal solutions
  • Rubber gloves
  • 2 cups white distilled vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Wash cloth or sponge
  • 2 cups water
  1. Step 1

Removing pet odor is only effective if you clean the affected area efficiently. Deep clean and scrub the carpet as thoroughly as possible. Use commercial products made to clean up pet messes such as Odor Destroyer or Odorzyme. When scrubbing the offensive smell away use a wash cloth or sponge and be sure to use rubber gloves when handling any harsh cleaners. Let the area air dry overnight. If the smell is still present, clean the area again. If you wish to use natural products to scrub away the mess, use vinegar and baking soda. Use a white distilled vinegar solution, 2 cups vinegar mixed with 2 cups water, and blot the area with a sponge or wash cloth. Liberally sprinkle baking soda on the affected area and let it set overnight, the longer the better. Baking soda adsorbs odors, taking them from the air and neutralizing acid-based odors in water. Vacuum the area after it has set. You can use a baking soda solution, but it tends to clump in the carpet, making it harder to get out.

  2. Step 2

If the odor is still persistent use a steam cleaner with a pet odor carpet cleaner solution. You can find the solution at a local pet store. If the odor is from pet urine, avoid using a steam cleaner. The heat will permanently set in the odor. When using the steamer, remove the water container and fill it with hot water and one cap full of the pet carpet cleaner and one cap full of carpet cleaner. You can use more cleaner if the mess or area is extensive. Clean your filter before using the steam cleaner if it has been used before. Put the container back into the steam cleaner. Turn on the machine, and push the cleaner forward and backward over the affected areas. Push the trigger to spray the soapy solution over the soiled area four or five times while pushing the machine back and forth. Let the area dry for 30 minutes to an hour before replacing furniture.

  3. Step 3

An effective way of removing pet urine odors is to use an enzymatic-based pet urine removal product. You can find this solution at a vet office or even online. Soak the area thoroughly, and cover it with a piece of cardboard or a lid from a storage tub for slow evaporation to help the solution eat away the odor-causing enzymes. Keep the area covered for thirty minutes to an hour.

  4. Step 4

If the offensive odor is still present, drastic measures may be suggested. Removing the carpet from your home or replacing your wood flooring can be expensive, but it is better compared to living with a pungent smell in your home.
