How to Measure a Bed for Sheets

Measuring your bed for sheets is an important process, especially for custom sheets. When a bed is measured properly, it ensures the sheets will fit comfortably and not slide off during the night. It also prevents excessive stretching of the fitted sheet. However, don't just rely on your mattress size for the sheet size. You'll need to measure on your own. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your bed's length from top to bottom. Place the tape measure at the very top of the bed, making sure you don't begin to curve the tape measure down to include any padding. Keep as flat of a line as you can. Stop the tape measure at the bottom of the bed. Record your length measurements.

    • 2

Place the tape measure across the widest part of the bed from left to right, again creating a line that is as flat as possible over the bed. Record the width measurement.

    • 3

Measure the mattress depth by placing your tape measure at the very top of your box spring. Measure to the top of any pillow tops or padding on the mattress. Round up to the nearest inch when you record your data.

    • 4

Determine the "drop", or how long linens must be to touch the floor for a custom comforter. Place the tape measure on the top edge of the mattress where you stopped measuring for width. Pull your tape measure down (don't ignore the curve, simply let the tape measure glide over it) to the point you wish the linen to stop. Double the length of the "drop" and add in the measurements for the width of the bed for the width of your comforter.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is helpful to ask another person to hold the tape measure to ensure accurate measurements.
