How to Sanitize a Relax Lie-Down Sauna

Dry saunas are usually more sanitary and more easily sanitized because bacteria doesn't thrive in dry air. However, in a traditional sauna with steam rocks or in a steam room lie-down sauna, regularly sanitizing the benches between users and in a more intensive daily routine is helpful to keep bacteria at bay. Several companies manufacture portable infrared lie-down saunas that are easily cleaned, carried and used.

Things You'll Need

  • Antibacterial sanitizer
  • Water spray bottle
  • Warm, soapy water
  • Clean towel

Instructions

    • 1

Wet the sauna cover with water from the spray bottle and wipe it down with a damp, clean towel. Wipe the sauna mat or bench with an antibacterial sanitizer sprayed onto a soft cloth.

    • 2

Turn on the sauna heater for a few minutes and let the sauna heat up to completely dry with the warm air. After the sauna dries, place a towel over the sauna bench before the next user to keep it clean. When the person is finished with the session, let the infrared heater run for another three to five minutes to sanitize between uses.

    • 3

Wipe down the whole interior of the dry sauna with an antibacterial sanitizer sprayed onto a cloth at the beginning of the day's usage. Turn on the sauna for five minutes to let the heat continue the drying process.

    • 4

Place a towel on the bench for users and give regular directions that for sanitary purposes, bare skin should not be placed directly on the wooden benches. If your company uses lightweight nylon suits, make sure each patron uses a suit for the sauna.

    • 5

Wipe the benches with warm, soapy water between users. If possible, let the sauna run for an additional three to five minutes after each patron. At the end of the day, spray the entire interior of the dry sauna with the anti-bacterial sanitizer and wipe off the excess spray.

    • 6

Let the sauna stand with the door open and completely air dry before reusing or reheating it. In a spa or health club setting, this should be done daily at the end of the day's sessions so the sauna can air dry overnight. If necessary, close the sauna at a certain time each day for sanitization & drying.

Tips & Warnings

  • To keep a sauna sanitary, always place a towel or cloth between people's skin and the wood benches of the sauna.

  • Wet saunas or steam saunas will more likely breed bacteria because of the moisture. Completely air dry steam saunas after sanitizing. Avoid cleaners with ammonia as it will turn the wood gray.
