Verify that your computer meets the minimum requirements for operating system, RAM, processor bus speed and overall processor speed before purchasing a Norton Antivirus product. If you are using Windows XP, Norton requires at least Service Pack 2 to be installed on your computer to guarantee satisfactory execution of the program. If Norton Antivirus appears to be running too slow, then you may not have an up-to-date service pack installed or may need to consider upgrading the amount of RAM on your computer.

Uninstall older versions of Norton or other antivirus programs installed on your computer before upgrading or initially installing Norton Antivirus. Norton will conflict with other antivirus programs or older versions of Norton that attempt to access operating system files that do not permit concurrent access. In order to remove an older version of Norton or another antivirus program select "Control Panel" from your computer's Start menu. Then double-click "Add/Remove Programs" and select the "Add/Remove Program" menu button next to the antivirus program you want to remove.

Verify that your computer firewall settings are not too restrictive to permit Norton Live Update from using your Internet connection to update the software. Depending on your firewall, choosing a security level of "medium" or "medium high" will permit Norton Live Update to run without reducing the level of security on your computer. On some computing systems, you may not be able to run Norton Live Update if you are not logged in to the computer as an administrator.

Download a computer registry cleaner and run it on your computer if Norton fails to install. CCleaner is a free registry cleaner that is known to work well. After running a registry cleaner, if Norton still fails to properly install, remove the program and reinstall it on your computer.
