How to Plant a Blue Poppy Anemone

The Blue Poppy anemone is also known as the Anemone coronaria. It is the easiest to grow of teh blue anemones. Each bulb will produce plants that grow 10 to 14 inches tall, with blue, poppy-like flowers. The best time to plant the Blue Poppy anemone is before the ground freezes, in the fall.       Soak the anemone bulb in a bucket of water for four hours.

      Choose a site in your garden that gets full sun for most of the day, and has good drainage. If your site lacks well-draining soil, amend it with the addition of two inches of organic material such as compost or peat moss.

      Dig the soil up to a depth of four inches, breaking up large clods of dirt and removing rocks or other debris. If adding soil amendments, mix them in well with the soil. Use the rake to level the soil.

      Dig a two-inch hole with the trowel, drop the anemone bulb into it, either side up, and cover with soil. If you are planting more than one Blue Poppy anemone bulb, plant them four inches apart.

      Water, soaking the soil. Make sure that the soil is kept moist, but not drenched, as the bulbs can rot with too much water.

Tips & Warnings

  • When the plant emerges in the spring, give it an application of all-purpose bulb fertilizer. To make the blooming period longer, pinch off any dead flowers.
