Orchids are not your typical houseplant and require some extra attention when being potted or re-potted. Orchids should be moved to a slightly bigger pot once they've overgrown the edges of their current home. Preparing the pot is a little more involved than just rinsing it off. There are two methods to sterilization of pots. The steps are simple but necessary to keep your orchid thriving and disease-free.

Sterilize Plastic of Clay Pot With Bleach Solution

  1. Step 1

Rinse the plastic or clay pot with plain warm water first to remove any loose debris.

  2. Step 2

Soak the pot in a mixture of 1/2 cup chlorine bleach per gallon of water for at least an hour.

  3. Step 3

Rinse thoroughly with warm water, and let air dry.

  4. Sterilize Clay Pots With an Oven

  5. Step 1

Place clay pots in an oven set at 400 degrees.

  6. Step 2

Bake the pots for one hour.

  7. Step 3

Allow the pot to cool completely inside the oven.

Tips & Warnings
  • When using bleach, be sure to work in a well-ventilated area and wear protective gloves. Do not preheat the oven first; this might cause pots with moisture on them to crack. It's best to shut off the oven and let the pot cool inside before removing it right away to prevent possible cracking.
