How to Fix Dings in a Bamboo Floor

Ecologically renewable, attractive and durable, bamboo flooring is becoming increasingly popular among homeowners. Although it has a hardness rating higher than maple and oak, bamboo is not indestructible. Normal wear and tear inevitably produces a few scratches. The steps below are arranged from the easiest fix for the smallest ding to a more intense repair on larger gouges. Follow them, and you'll have the dings out of your floor in no time.

Things You'll Need

• 200-grit sandpaper
• Buffing cloth
• Wax stain like Bri-wax
• Soft, clean cloth or sponge
• Wood filler
• Water
• Urethane spray
• Painter's mask

Instructions

1. Use a buffing cloth to see if you can just rub out a small ding. If it is still visible, dip the corner of a soft cloth or sponge into some wax stain and apply it to the ding. Let it dry for a minute, and then buff it out.

2. Use very fine sandpaper on a larger ding. Wipe off the dust, and then use a wax stain and the buffing cloth to finish it.

3. Wet-sand the edges of a large gouge, and then let it dry, Apply the wax stain, and finish with the buffing cloth.

4. Repair a large, deep gouge by wet-sanding the edges. Follow with the buffing cloth, and then wipe away any dust. Fill the gouge with wood filler. Let it dry and sand it flush with the floor. Finish with the buffing cloth, and then put on your painter's mask and seal the gouge with urethane spray.

Tips & Warnings

• For really tiny dings, try a crayon the same color as your floor.

• Never wax a floor that has a urethane coating on it.
