Hedge roses are rose bushes that have been planted and pruned to make hedges for borders or decorations. Roses are one of the most recognized kinds of flowers in the world. They are prized for their beauty and scent. They also come in a variety of species, hybrids and colorings. This makes identifying particular types of hedge roses a little more difficult than some other plants.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Examine your hedge roses. Take note of the coloring, the shape of the bush and the shape of the blooms. You should also examine the leaf and stem shapes. Are there thorns? If so, how are they positioned? If possible, take a few photos of the hedge roses so that you have something to compare.

  2. Step 2

Measure the height of your hedge rose plant. Take into account any pruning or shaping you may have done to the bush.

  3. Step 3

Observe how often the hedge rose plants bloom. While some roses bloom once a year, others bloom all year round.

  4. Step 4

Gather the pictures and information you took about your hedge roses and compare to the information that can be found in plant identifying databases. (See Resources.) Your local libraries and bookstores will also have books that have reference information about hedge roses and their identifying characteristics.

  5. Step 5

Ask the staff at your local gardening center for help. They are often knowledgeable about the plants that grow in your climate and can offer professional help in identifying your hedge rose plants. Be sure to bring pictures and the information about your hedge roses.
