Chalky white film can form on outdoor plastic chairs when the resin in the plastic reacts with rainwater and the sun's ultraviolet rays. The fastest method for getting rid of the film involves using a power washer, then scrubbing the furniture by hand with a brush and household cleaning products to remove the chalky powder and protect against rot and the onset of mold.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Power washer
  • Water
  • Garden hose
  • Ammonia
  • Plastic spray bottle
  • Nylon bristle brush
  • Plastic bucket
  1. Step 1

Rent or buy a power washer and connect the compressor valve on the side to a garden hose.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the spray wand to a medium to low pressure.

  3. Step 3

Blast the chairs with the power washer, moving around the furniture to clean all sides. Working in straight lines up and down will help peel away the white film quickly and efficiently.

  4. Step 4

Spray ammonia on all surfaces of the plastic using the spray bottle.

  5. Step 5

Scrub the furniture with the nylon bristle brush.

  6. Step 6

Rinse the chairs with a garden hose and allow to air dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • Use the power washer only on low to medium settings. Full pressure can scuff up and scratch the furniture, making the chairs uncomfortable to use.
