How to Draw & Paint Houses

The house in this drawing has only been made 3 1/2" tall, but this can be made to a scale appropriate for your needs. The drawing is less detailed because the paint will cover up the drawing anyway, but the details may be added if that is what you need. Note that the more detailed your drawing is, the more difficult it will be to paint within the confines of your drawing.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper or canvas
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Paint
  • Paintbrushes (one thin paintbrush, one detail brush)

Instructions

  1. Drawing The House

    • 1

      Draw a 2-inch square.

    • 2

Draw a triangle, 1 1/2 inches tall, situated over the square with the edges hanging over the right and left sides of the square.

    • 3

Draw a rectangle near the lower left corner of the square. The rectangle will represent the door. It should be 3/4 inch tall and 1/4 inch wide. The rectangle will extend to the bottom of the square and be 1/8 inch from the left edge of the house.

    • 4

Draw a 1/2-inch tall and 1/4-inch wide window 1/8 inch to the right of the door.

    • 5

Repeat step 4 to make another window 1/8 inch to the right of the window you just drew.

    • 6

Repeat step 4 to draw a row of windows on the second floor. Make the first window above the door, and the remaining windows above the windows on the first floor.

    Painting The House

    • 7

Dip your thin paintbrush in brick-red paint. Paint the central square of the house brick-red. Exclude the windows and door. Clean your brush.

    • 8

Dip the thin brush in white paint. Paint the triangular section of the roof white. Clean your paintbrush.

    • 9

Dip your thin brush in light blue. Paint the base color of the windows light blue. Clean your brush.

    • 10

Dip your thin brush in a color of your choice and paint the door. Clean your brush.

    • 11

Pick up your detail brush and dip it in white paint. Paint a straight vertical line down the middle of each window. Then paint a straight horizontal line in every window, one-third of the way down from the top, and another straight horizontal line two-thirds of the way down from the top. This is delineating the window panes from each other.

    • 12

Dip your paintbrush in white paint again and outline each window.

Tips & Warnings

  • The method used to clean your paintbrush depends on the type of paint you are using--water will clean water-based paints like watercolor and acrylic, where as turpentine will clean off oil paint. This painting is still rather simplistic. Add details as desired, such as shutters for the windows, details on the door like panels and a wreath, or even a chimney.
