How to Clean Mold on Painted Surfaces

Mold growth on painted surfaces can cause harm to humans and pets as well as distract from the aesthetic appeal of the object. If left untreated, mold can grow rapidly and spread out over the entire surface. Mold should be removed from painted surfaces as soon as it is recognized. With some household items and the proper tools, mold can be successfully removed from painted surfaces.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

    In a small bucket, mix a solution of two parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide.

  2. Step 2

    Add two tablespoons of baking soda to the solution and mix to dissolve.

  3. Step 3

    Dampen a sponge with the cleaning solution and apply it to the affected surface. Allow to set for five minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Scrub the painted surface with a soft bristled brush to loosen the mold particles. You may want to re-wet the surface with the sponge.

  5. Step 5

    Wipe the surface with a clean, dry cloth.

  6. Step 6

    Repeat the process, as needed, to completely remove mold from painted surfaces.

Tips & Warnings
  • Wash all cleaning supplies and cloths in very hot water, laundry detergent and bleach. Clean mold from painted surfaces as soon as it is noticeable.
  • Wear latex gloves to avoid getting chemicals on your skin. Work in a well-ventilated area. Keep all cleaning products out of the reach of children.
