The challenging part of removing silicone caulk from a window has to do with the silicone itself. According to Lowes.com, silicone caulk holds up better than latex caulk in sunlight, fills gaps very well and tends to last longer than other types of caulk. Silicone caulk also has a pronounced odor when it is installed, and it cannot be painted. There are no cleaning solutions or special tools you can use to remove silicone caulk; it simply takes patience and a lot of effort.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Put on protective work gloves and use the utility knife to cut in between the caulk and the frame to get the caulk away from the frame. Take this process very slowly, as you do not want to damage the glass in the frame or the window frame itself. Go a few inches at a time while cutting, and make several passes with the utility knife in problem areas.

  2. Step 2

Use the putty knife to start carefully separating the silicone caulk from the window and the frame. Use subtle rocking motions in between the caulk and the frame. Do not scrape across the frame, as you will damage the glass.

  3. Step 3

Go back over the area with the putty knife to remove any excess pieces of caulk.

  4. Step 4

Clean the areas where there was caulk with mineral spirits and a sponge to remove the film left by the silicone caulk. Mineral spirits can damage certain kinds of paint, so be very precise about where you use the mineral spirits and how much you use. Use as little mineral spirits as possible to get the job done.

  5. Step 5

Use a wire brush to gently wipe away any remnants of caulk and the film left behind by the caulk as well. Towel-dry the wood and glass when done.

Tips & Warnings
  • This project will take a while, so be patient and use very deliberate movements to try and salvage the window glass and frame. If you encounter resistance when using the utility knife, do not add extra pressure to try and punch the knife through the caulk. Cut away at the caulk from both sides until you can get through.
  • Avoid getting mineral spirits in your eyes or mouth, and do not drink the mineral spirits.
