How to Get a Driving License in the Philippines

If you are visiting the Philippines and plan to drive a vehicle, you may be curious of how to obtain a driver's license. If you are visiting temporarily, up to 90 days, you may use your American driver's license to drive legally. After 90 days, however, you must visit The Land Transportation Office (LTO) to get a non-professional driver's license. The LTO is responsible for administrating driver's licenses in the Philippines and will be responsible for issuing you your license. If you already have a driver's license, obtaining a license in the Philippines is fairly easy.

Things You'll Need

• Internet access
• Original license (foreign)
• Original valid Visa/Passport

Instructions

1. Visit the local LTO location. A list of office locations can be found by on the LTO website (see Resources).

2. Download, complete and print the Driver's License application. The License / Permit Application Form can be found on the Download section of the LTO website (see Resources).

3. Submit your completed application along with your foreign driver's license and original valid visa or passport along with a photocopy of both items to the cashier.

4. Receive a receipt from the LTO that will serve as your temporary license for up to 60 days. As of 2009, the non-professional license costs around US $5. Your permanent license will be mailed to your place of residence. The license is valid for three years.

Tips & Warnings
