How to Build an Upside Down Planter for Tomatoes & Cucumbers
After the idea for the upside down tomato planter emerged through national television, many people with gardens began creating homemade versions. You can do this yourself. Just keep in mind that the idea is to let the tomatoes or cucumbers grow from a hanging position. You can create a planter with items that you may already have on hand. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Plants that have already sprouted
- Potting soil
- Plastic grocery bags with handles
- Canvas bags
- 2-liter soda bottles

The Canvas Bag

Cut a hole in the bottom of the canvas bag and a hole in the bottom of the plastic bag. The hole should be just big enough to slide the leaves and stem of the plant through it.

Place the plastic bag inside the canvas bag and line up the holes.

Slide the leaves and stem of the plant from the inside of the bag through the holes on both the plastic bag and the canvas bag, leaving the roots inside the bag.

Fill the plastic bag with potting soil, making sure you cover the roots of the plant.

Hang the planter in a location that has good sun exposure, using the handles on the canvas bag.

Water your plant.
Soda Bottles

Cut the bottom off the 2-liter soda bottle.

Insert the stem of the plant and the leaves through the drink hole opening on the bottle, starting from inside the bottle.

Fill the container with potting soil.

Cut a hole in the bottom of a plastic grocery bag with handles, just large enough for the drink hole opening of the soda bottle to go through.

Insert the soda bottle and plant into the plastic grocery bag and slide the plant through the hole in the bottom of the bag. Using the handles of the plastic grocery bag, hang the planter up and water the plant.

You can also plant herbs or flowers on top of the soil in your planter, allowing the planter to support two types of plants.
