Designing a bumper pad for your baby's cradle can be a fun and economical way to express originality and creative flare. Bumper pads sold retail are priced in excess of $80 and easily top the hundred dollar range. Designing your own cradle bumper pad can ensure that you are able to use your own type, design, and color scheme. You are also able to control the amount of padding the crib pad contains. Designing your own bumper pad is a simple process that requires only basic sewing skills.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Using your measuring tape, measure along the perimeter of your baby's cradle to determine how much material you will need. For example, if your baby's cradle is 3' long and 2' wide, then you will need 10' of fabric.

  2. Step 2

Write down how much material you will need to make the bumper pad.

  3. Step 3

Decide on the material you would like to use for the bumper pad. Your decision may be based on fabric type, color scheme, or pattern.

  4. Step 4

Purchase enough fabric to ensure that it fits the dimensions of your cradle.

  5. Step 5

Mark the cradle dimensions on the fabric.

  6. Step 6

Using your scissors, cut enough fabric to make the bumper pad.

  7. Step 7

Using your interior padding, fill the bumper pad material to suit your needs.

  8. Step 8

Use your sewing machine to sew a continuous line to close up the fabric padding into the bumper pad.

  9. Step 9

Once your bumper pad has been sewn with the fabric filling inside, use your measuring tape and marker to measure and mark six evenly spaced markers on your bumper pad. For example, if your bumper pad is 6' long, your marks will occur every 1' of fabric.

  10. Step 10

Using your sewing machine, attach the ribbons to the evenly spaced marks. Two ribbons will be sewn at each marked spot (one on one side of the fabric, the other directly opposite on the other side of the fabric).

  11. Step 11

Ensure that each of the 12 ribbons are sewn properly onto the fabric. Double stitch the fabric to ensure that baby's pulling will not cause the ribbons to come loose.

  12. Step 12

Fit the bumper pad into your baby's cradle and attach the ribbons to the cradle bars by tying each of the two strands of ribbon together to ensure that the pad stays in place.

  13. Step 13

Continue dressing the cradle to suit your aesthetic preferences.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure that your bumper pad is not overly filled with fabric stuffing. This will help reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome).
