Accidents are likely to happen on mattresses eventually, especially in homes with pets and small children. Cleaning urine from a mattress can be a difficult task, and buying a new mattress is quite costly. The good news is that simple household items can be used to clean up the mess and keep mattresses fresh for years to come. The key is to clean up accidents as soon as possible to prevent urine from soaking into the mattress, resulting in permanent stains and odors.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use paper towels to blot up the urine. Press into the mattress, and do not use a rubbing motion, to prevent spreading the stain. Repeat until as much urine as possible has been removed.

  2. Step 2

Sprinkle the area with baking soda and allow to dry overnight to help draw out remaining moisture and absorb odors.

  3. Step 3

Vacuum the baking soda from the mattress.

  4. Step 4

Mix 1 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of warm water in a spray bottle.

  5. Step 5

Spray the vinegar and water mixture on the affected area of the mattress and blot up with paper towels.

  6. Step 6

Allow the mattress to dry, in the sun if possible, to air out any remaining odors.

Tips & Warnings
  • If urine accidents occur frequently, consider investing in a protective mattress cover to save time and money and help your mattress last longer.
