Storm windows are a good addition to any home. Besides providing an extra window to help lessen a storm's damage, they also provide an additional layer of insulation. Storm windows may seem to be expensive when you first price them; however, they serve the additional purpose of adding extra value to your home if you decide to sell it. In the long run, you may well see a return on your initial investment. Many homeowners remove storm windows and clean them in spring, so fresh air can come into their homes after winter heating.
Things You'll Need
- Work gloves
- Utility knife
- Old blankets, a tarp or bubble wrap
Put on work gloves before you remove the storm windows for cleaning. Remove the screens from the windows.
Use a utility knife to loosen the glass if the window frame has paint preventing easy removal of your storm windows.
Lift the windows up and then pull them down to remove them. If your storm windows are very large, you might want to get someone to help you to minimize the chance of breaking the window.
Clean your storm windows and store them if you will not be putting them back into the frames. If you want to clean the windows in winter, put them back into the frame after cleaning.
Cover the storm windows you plan to store with old blankets, a tarp or bubble wrap. Store the windows in a safe place until you put them back into the frames.

- Clean your windows with a solution of 2 cups vinegar mixed with one gallon of hot water.
- Never try to force your storm windows out of the frame. This can cause the window to break and you may receive injuries as a result.
